Remember last year when we learned of the budget cuts after they happened? This year we are again facing a budget shortfall and music programs are on the chopping block. The Edmonds School District has created an educational exercise to illustrate the ’24-’25 school year shortfall, called the Balancing Act.
The elimination of 5th and 6th grade band and orchestra are being considered. The elimination of these classes throughout the district WILL have huge consequences for years to music in middle and high schools.
The Balancing Act mistakenly says that band and orchestra are in addition to (required) general music. This is accurately stated. Band and orchestra are chosen over a general music class. Students are not taking a general music class and also a band or orchestra class. We need to keep performance band and orchestra.
This exercise will give you an idea of what could be eliminated and is an opportunity to have your voice heard. The exercise is difficult – if you can’t complete it, please at least add your comments on the provided Google form to reiterate the importance of music education in our primary and secondary schools.
Please continue to contact your state legislators! Electives such as music and performing arts will continue to be targets as long as the school district is underfunded. The Balancing Act tool is open now and will be open until March 18 at 9:00 a.m. You can find the tool here: https://edmonds-budget.abalancingact.com/most-current-budget-for-24-25
