The 27th annual Jazz Symposium will be on Saturday, October 28 starting at 7 AM and wrapping up around 5 PM. We need your help in hosting this fabulous event at MTHS. The Symposium brings together regional middle and high school big bands and combos for a day of performances and clinics. Each registered band and combo has a 20-25 minute performance followed by a 20-25 minute clinic with a professional jazz musician. They will receive valuable feedback that will help them develop as musicians. This may be your student’s first experience with this process, but it won’t be their last. They will experience this format at all the Jazz Festivals they will participate in over the year as part of being in the Jazz Band. Some are competitive, but the one we host is simply experiential, and a great introduction to the year.
As the host school, we provide many things; videography of performances and clinics, concessions (including lunch) for students (many of whom are there for most of the day), instrument security, a breakfast, a potluck lunch for the directors and clinicians, stage set up for each band, clinic rooms for each band, and several other services. As you can imagine, we need MANY volunteers to help us set up and run a smooth event…this is where you come in.
Please sign up to help. This is a wonderful way to meet other parents and students, and experience the community that this band becomes. Come help us set up, usher, sell food, decorate, videotape performances, assist with stage set up, instrument security, provide potluck items and donations of food, drinks, etc. for concessions. The possibilities are endless!
Students will also be asked to volunteer their time when they are not performing. As hosts, they will be asked to help us with set up on the afternoon of Friday Oct 27th, and they will also help by assisting the clinicians, escorting bands through the school, running errands, ushering and packing up at the end of the symposium. Please keep their schedules clear for Friday afternoon and all-day Saturday.
