2025 Sea Notes at the Marina Wraps Up

Last Thursday we finished our 5th and final 2025 Sea Notes at the Marina! In total, we had 28 musicians from five schools participate in our five jazz jam sessions.

Quick Facts

Musicians that attended all five jam sessions? 1 –  (Jett)

# of incoming freshmen participating? 1 – Siddharth (Sidd)

# of schools represented? 5 – MTHS, Madrona K8, Maplewood K8, North Creek HS, Shorewood HS

# of alumni performed? 7

# of musicians? 28 in total performed at 1 or more of the jam sessions. 24 MTHS musicians in total.

We appreciate having all our musicians perform and having our parents, families, and friends come out to support! The community support was outstanding. I talked with a lot of people who had kids graduate years ago from MTHS and those who didn’t have kids at MTHS but knew our music program’s reputation. There were many,  many compliments for our musicians!

Sea Notes (also known as Sea Jazz) is great way to continue playing throughout the summer. Our jam sessions are part of the larger Sea Notes events that occur five days/week all summer. Edmonds-Woodway HS performs on Wednesdays, Andrew Sumabet (MTHS alumni) hosts Friday night jam sessions, and many other groups perform on other days. The sessions are meant to be an opportunity to grow the musician’s musicianship. Every musicians is learning how to engage with musicians in a small group without a music director, finding out how best to highlight themselves through soloing and support other musicians in their solos, and building confidence to provide verbal and non-verbal queues on changes throughout the song. Sometimes it works great and sometimes it doesn’t. But, the important part is that everyone shows up and keeps on playing!

I hope all 28 musicians had a great time performing and will continue to participate in the North City Bistro jam sessions and jazz combos throughout the school year.

Are you an incoming freshman? Are you a current MTHS musicians that wants to join our jam sessions? You are welcome to join us at our almost monthly jam sessions at North City Bistro in Shoreline. Join us for our first one of the school year on October 11.

Thank you to Anthony’s Beach Cafe, Port of Edmonds, and Pete Bennett for organizing and supporting Sea Notes at the Marina.
